M3 or 3 series I am sure you are somewhat familiar with the control arms and control arm bushings that need to be replaced every so often depending on the car use. One common weak point in the E3. The front suspension ball joints in particular are prone to wearing out quite quickly thanks to a soft material in the ball joint itself, leaving you in a potentially dangerous situation. At best, worn ball joints and bushings will give you poor steering feedback and clunking noises. However, loose or worn ball joints will have excessive play which will drastically reduce the effectiveness of the steering and suspension. In extreme cases, the ball joint has been known to pop free of the control arm, resulting in total steering loss. I would recommend replacing these parts often every year on a race car depending on the amount of races you do and every 2  years for a track car and as needed on a street car. Failure to replace a worn control arm on a racecar or track car can result in loss of control and lots of other bad stuff bodily injury, totaled car, death to name a few. Control Arms for E3. For the E3. 6 there are 3 common choices for control arms. There are the stock original equipment control arms and ball joints usually made by Lempforder pictured right, there is the HD Steel option made by Meyle and also the aluminum option which is considerably lighter. There is not much difference between these options other than weight and price. The aluminum control arms are the lightest and the most expensive. They are approximately 3 pounds lighter than the same steel control arms and run about 3. The Meyle HD control arms for E3. E3. 6 control arm bushings with a higher grade metal in their HD ball joints, similar to those used on the E3. M3. The metal will not wear or fatigue nearly as fast as the standard ball joints. The lifespan is greatly extended. A side benefit of the stiffer joint is better steering response. The metal will not flex or deflect like plastic, rubber, or any other material. The lack of play will mean sharper steering, restoring much of the cars precision and fun to drive character. A pair of these run about 2. And finally the OE E3. M3 control arms have similar ball joints and materials as the Meyle HD control arms providing the stiff and responsive ride you are use to in your M3. Control Arm Bushings In my opinion there are only a few options for control arm bushings for E3. There are the offset and centered delrin bushings, offset and centered solid rubber bushings and the OE rubber bushings. Both of these options are quite different. The offset Delrin bushings are a hard compound recommended for frequent track use or racing applications. Delrin is a reisgn that bridges the gap between hard metals and ordinary plastics. Delrin is used in many precision parts that require high stiffness, low friction, and excellent dimensional stability. These bushings are offset because the hold where they mount to the control arm is offset to the outside of the vehicle to provide more negative camber adjustment. These bushings provide added stability and stiffness in high speed cornering and more precision at turn in. Solid rubber bushings are a great alternative to Delrin and the stock OE rubber bushings if you want to achieve more track, caster, and camber with the offset hole while still being able to street the car. Turner offers these solid rubber control arm bushings factory equipment on 9. M3 with an offset and centered hole to give you a choice. Either is great for autocross and high performance driving schools. These bushings provide a great middle ground giving your E3. The OE bushings are made of the rubber compound found in most OE bushings. The advantages of these bushings is their long life, durability and ride comfort for the road. These bushings do not allow for quite as much negative camber adjustment see camber plates below and do not offer the added stability at high speed cornering that a delrin bushing does. These bushings are perfectly suited for street driving as well as some on track driving at high performance driving schools as BMW designed them for this. I would not recommend these for a purpose built track car. As you can see there are some options available for control arms and control arm bushings depending on what you use your car for. If your car is primarily a street car and is occasionally used for an autocross event or a driving school then the stock bushings are fine. If you are more serious about tracking your car and autocross events attending more than 3 or 4 a year then the solid rubber bushings either centered or offset might be the right option for your. If your E3. 6 is dedicated for the track or racing then the ultimate setup would be the aluminum control arms and offset delrin bushings. The best way to replace your worn bushings and control arms is to order the complete control arm with ball joints installed and a control arm bushing bracket with the bushing pre pressed in so you can slide the bushing onto the end of the control arm and install the bracket directly on the car.
